Will the US Allow Saudi Arabia Nuclear Energy Possession?
Filed in archive Current News on December 20, 2006
I side with US Secretary of State condoleezza rice on this one. Why would Saudi Arabia, the world's largest producer of oil, need nuclear energy now? The six-member Gulf Cooperation Council claims that this is for the protection of the Arab countries last week, in case Iran arms itself with one but my lay-man's view is that handing out cigars in a hay field only increases the incidence of fire and catastrophe. Not a good thing if you want to protect the supply of hay and keep everybody at peace.
And so I hope that the US will stand firm on this issue. After all, we don't want a nuclear situation arising anytime a hot head decides to level the world.

1) They may save money by building nuclear and selling the oil. Unlikely.
2) They don't want Iran to gain more hegemony.
The U.S. may want a nuclear Saudi Arabia to balance to Iran (needed now that we have destroyed Iraq) but it would threaten Israel, so I don't see it happening.
