Will Japan Subsidize Green Cars?

April 8th, 2009

TreeHugger published a piece last week on the possibilityrumor that Japan's government may start encouraging green cars ownership with a $3000 (300,000 yen) subsidy.

The Japanese media has been reporting that the subsidies will be part of a big stimulus package that may include money for energy-saving home appliances and other energy-saving technologies.

Reuters broke that news to the English-speaking world; they got it from Nikkei, a Japanese business daily. Toyota would be the big winner in that deal. Their Prius is the leading hybrid in Japan.
