On a hot summer day, 20% of your gasoline vaporizes into the air instead of powering your engine. This volume of gasoline becomes un-burnt hydrocarbon air pollutant and at a car population of 230 million in the US, that amount becomes dangerously high. Enter the On Board distillation System (OBDS) and promising new gasoline saving device that cuts air pollution.
What the OBDS does is work on gasoline's relatively low volatility (its inability to change from a liquid to a gas). It separates high-volatility components from gasoline and uses them after start-up, when the system warms up and becomes more efficient.
At an increased fuel economy of 1 percent, reduced fuel requirements by 70%, and at a significant reduction in hydrocarbon emissions level, the OBDS is a good stop-gap and energy saver.
