The EU Wouldn't Take It
Filed in archive Current News on October 16, 2006
What would you do if you are leading a pack of leaders who wouldn't cooperate? Threaten the, of course! And that is what the European Commission did to 15 of its members. The European Commission would take legal action if these 15 member countries do not provide full information of their pollution emission reduction plans, a requirement by the 25-country association before the January 2008 start of the EU's carbon emissions trading system.
Surprisingly, the countries that received legal threat from the EU are all renewable energy leaders. Spain, France, Germany, and Italy and 11 others were given warning letters asking them why they missed the June deadline for the submission of their environmental plans.
The EU's ballsy move is a part of their implementation program of the 1997 Kyoto global climate change pact, which binds the 25 countries to carbon emission cuts by 8 percent from 1990 levels by 2012. Very exciting, indeed! Read more here.
