The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009

The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 exists now in draft form in the U.S. House. The WWF is happy; groups like Shop Floor are unhappy.

I had to laugh at one of Shop Floor's points. They agreed that the new law would create a lot of jobs, but said that so did Hurricane Katrina...

Justin Moresco over at Red Herring described the bill this way:

the draft bill includes a nationwide renewable portfolio standard that requires electric utilities to get at least 6 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2012. That baseline gradually rises to 25 percent by 2025, and states may choose to meet one-fifth of this requirement with energy efficiency measures.
The Daily Kos has weighed in on it, as has the H Post. We'll see what it looks like after Congress has worked it over a couple of times. Laws and sausages...
