One Billion Tons of Oil Equivalent
fossil fuels supply 8 Billion tons of energy while nuclear energy delivers nearly 1 Billion today. For solar and wind power to be significant, it should produce about the same amount of energy in the next 20 to 30 years says Total of France.

Total, an oil conglomerate, has been pursuing renewable energy strategies since 2001, and their latest endeavor is the development of a 90 MW wind farm in southwest France, envisioned to begin operations by 2008.

Total is also looking into the possibility of a 120 MW off-shore wind project with the Royal Dutch Shell company, and its involvement in the company Photovoltech, a joint venture undertaking with Belgium's Electrabel.

Will Wind and Solar ever get to that magic number by 2030? Total believes it is possible, but only with government support. Read more about this story here.
