The UN thinks its ok to support the European Union's bid to blend biofuels into transport fuels despite alarming news of environemntal damages, particularly in South-East Asia and Brazil. According to Achim Steiner, head of the UN Environment Programme, biofuels are needed to reduce global dependence on fossil fuels. He further believes that the market will eventually ease out the erring producers and force them to find sustainable means of production.
But what if they don't? This has been the argument of many environmental groups, citing in fact, the massive forest fires and forced plantings in once forested areas of Indonesia and other South East Asian countries.
So is it a case of good intentions and bad executions? Tell me what you think.
