Iowa Plans to Establish $200 M Cellulose-to-Ethanol Facility

The project is called Liberty (short for Launch of an Integrated Bio-refinery with Eco-sustainable and Renewable Technologies) and it will be located in Emmetsburg, Iowa. The facility under Liberty's belt will be a new $200 M advanced corn fractionation and lignocellulosic ethanol conversion facility that by 2009, will produce 50 gallons of anhydrous fuel ethanol. What is more, the new facility is said to be more productive (27% more ethanol from one acre of corn) and more efficient (83% less energy than traditional corn-based ethanol plants).

The project is being built by Broin Companies, a dominant ethanol producer and the US Department of Energy (DOE). Read more about this development here.
