Fuel Cell Standards
Filed in archive Edge Technology by Reden Rodriguez on August 21, 2006
As Fuel cells become mainstream renewable energy resources, it is important to set benchmarks to measure its performance and output. Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have launched an effort to set performance standards for fuel cells, particularly for residential fuel cells. Because residential fuel cells operate under varying conditions such as changing electrical and heating demands, outside temperatures, humidity, and presence of other power systems, the need to study their efficiency under various combinations of factors is important for improved fabrication and residential fuel cell use.

The NIST will draft testing and rating procedures to a relevant committee represented by industry, government, and academic organizations. The ultimate result and benefit of a system is an understanding of fuel cell performance, the cost of its operation, and the ability to choose fuel cell products that best benefit the consumer.
