Eisenhower Fights Another Battle
Filed in archive Current News on September 13, 2006
This time it's not the General but his granddaughter. Susan Eisenhower, the head of Washington DC's Eisenhower Institute, a foreign policy and security think-tank in the US capital, is advocating the preservation of the Scotland's landscape and is opposing the development of a £20m wind farm which will have 250 feet high turbines.
Ms. Eisenhower is fighting for the Culzean Castle, an 18th century estate owned by the National Trust on the Ayrshire coast. According to Ms. Eisenhower:
"There are many places where wind farms can be built, but there is only one Culzean Castle with its magnificent sweep of views. My grandfather loved Culzean Castle and it is a place enjoyed by thousands of Scots and overseas visitors every year. The setting is absolutely irreplaceable. It should be protected."
The developer of the wind turbines, Banks Group is naturally fighting Ms. Eisenhower and the National Trust, who have always been supportive of renewable energy projects. According to the Banks Group, the view of the turbines from the castle and the grounds are limited. Putting up the wind farm will benefit the community for a 25-year lifespan.
Let's see how this one pans out. Read more here.
