Alternative Fuel Coal

Coal is a fossil fuel that is used because it is cheaper than anything else right now. And its use is the greatest contributor of green house gas emissions. But it seems like coal-state lawmakers in the US are adamant on coal as the next "alternative fuel". This works if their technology is really clean mind you, but how do we prove that now?
I thought we were moving towards a more RE economy???
