Al Gore Gets Busy
Filed in archive Current News on September 21, 2006
Man, is this guy busy or what? I tell you, if I could vote for him I would. Al Gore may have been a losing presidential candidate, but if US presidents had the tenacity that Al Gore has especially when it comes to environmental issues, then that country and this planet may have a chance.
Here is a round up of what Mr. Gore has been doing this week.
In New York, Mr. Gore proposed penalizing pollution instead of penalizing employees by automatic tax deductions from their salaries. His point was that carbon tax could replace all payroll taxes and even pay for Social Security and unemployment compensation. He said: "Instead of discouraging businesses from hiring more employees it would discourage business from producing more pollution."
The New York Times reports that Mr. Gore seeked for an immediate freeze of emissions coming from smokestacks and tail pipes which many scientists say, are connected to global warming. He also said "Merely engaging in high-minded debates about theoretical future reductions while continuing to steadily increase emissions represents a self-delusional and reckless approach. In some ways, that approach is worse than doing nothing at all, because it lulls the gullible into thinking that something is actually being done, when in fact it is not."
Mr. Gore also proposed a Carbon Neutral Mortgage Association (now lovingly referred to as Connie Mae) which aims to help homes retrofit or build energy efficient houses. He also suggested the creation of an Electranet, a wholesale type of system that would enable homeowners to buy and sell electricity. Mr. Gore believes that the issue is not political but a moral one and he added that "Put simply, it is wrong to destroy the habitability of our planet and ruin the prospects of every generation that follows ours."
And really saving the best for last, Mr. Gore proposed a platform that would allow for renewable energy development and climate change mitigation which included the items quoted above. Quite a feat!
Is he running for president? Is he silly or does he make sense? Many detractors say he is silly and that this is all a political ploy. If it is, people are buying. After all, if this guy promises to save the world for future generations, I would give him my vote, if that is all the hope that there is left.

Hello Christopher, thank you for dropping by. I have to agree with you, holding a public position such as president is a tough job because you have to be exactly that, a moderate person always having a moderate position in controversial global issues. I am not from the US but my sentiments are universal. I wish for leaders with balls (pardon the language) the size of watermelons. I hope for decisive leaders who have the capacity to decide beyond party policies. Too idealistic? Yes I would say so too.

From Alaska to the Everglades, New Jersey to California, Al Gore talks about being an environmentalist, but he's sold out American citizens, workers, taxpayers and the environment more times than we can count.
He sides with clear-cutting timber barons, big sugar, big oil and real estate speculators over forests and watersheds, parks and wildlife. And we lose those fights because when Al Gore sells out, national environmental groups come to his aide, claiming the problem lies somewhere else, with Congress or federal agencies. But we all know the buck stops at the White House."

It was only after he left office and the pressures (from a party dominated by business interests though perhaps not as much as the Republicans) that he became someone worth listening to.
If he ran for office again, he would have to moderate his calls for true change or be rejected by the Dems. And he does not have enough support to run without party support.
So lets encourage Gore to keep up the good fight by doing what he has been doing for the last few years. I would say he has done more good out of office than he did in office.
