VentureBeat reported recently on the U.S. Department of Energy's announced intention to provide $27.6 million in funding for 19 different projects testing "the efficiency of underground carbon dioxide sequestration as a potential strategy for reducing greenhouse gases and preventing global warming."
Coal provides the US with a dilemma. It provides half the country's electricity and 80% of it's green house gas production. If carbon sequestration technology can be brought to an effective and affordable level, replacing coal as an energy source becomes much less urgent – perhaps even unnecessary.
