140 Wind Turbines at Outer Thames Estuary
Filed in archive Wind on February 28, 2007
I recently reported the UK breaching the 2 GW wind power mark. It looks like they are not stopping at all.
This month, UK Secretary of State Alistair Darling approved the first offshore wind farm outside British territorial waters. Airtricity and Flour of Texas are beginning to design a 500 MW offshore wind farm. According to Secretary Darling:
"We need more renewable energy as part of the mix of generation of electricity. It cuts emissions while powering homes. We are seeing this industry grow by the day. Only two weeks ago we reached the 2 GW wind energy landmark, it took more than 10 years to get the first GW and less than 20 months to get the second," said Darling. "It is a key part of our approach; we will continue to back it."
This development brings the UK's wind power portfolio to 2.4 GW, and rising.
The wind must really be blowing towards fruition in the UK.
